Ceftazidime (Fortum) as Empiric Therapy in Febrile Neutropenic Patients

Abstract
Successful treatment of febrile granulocytopenic patients with suspected or documented infection requires the prompt initiation of empiric broad spectrum antimicrobial therapy. In granulocytopenic patients, there is a frequent desire to avoid
combination therapy with an aminoglycoside because of increasing use of other nephrotoxic drugs.
In vitro studies, there was little difference between the activity of ceftazidime alone and a combination of piperacillin, netilmicin, cefotaxime. We performed clinical studies to assess the efficacy and tolerability of ceftazidime in 17 febrile
neutropenic patients who were admitted to Dept. of Internal Medicine of Kyung Hee university Hospital, from June 1988 to June 1989, and the results were as follows.
!) The success rate without modification was 44%, the success rate with modification 37%, and the failure rate 21%.
2) The cefatazidime related toxicities were elevation of AST, ALT (29%), hypokalemia (17%), and drug eruption (1 case 6%), but renal dysfunction was not observed.
